Challenges
- Confined space constraints
- Hydrocarbon presence requiring a cold-work solution
Benefits
- No hot work or habitats required
- Reduced safety risks and personnel requirements
Scope
Confined spaces and the presence of hydrocarbons can make hot work impossible during pipework modifications, presenting both logistical and safety concerns.
At a facility in Torrance, California, a major multinational energy company was replacing a concrete sump that collected relief drainage from pressure relief valves (PRVs) throughout the system with a new PMC-fabricated tank.
The project required a new tie-in to a 6” carbon steel Schedule 40 pipe carrying crude oil, gasoline and diesel.
Solution
The customer engaged Pacific Mechanical Construction (PMC), a local construction and contracting company trained and qualified to deliver Quickflange™ installations, to complete the sump replacement and new pipework tie-in.
Quickflange™ provided a permanent, weldless solution for the flange-to-pipe connections required for the tie-in, eliminating the need for hot work and associated habitats while simplifying installation within the confined space.
The cold-work installation process uses a specialised hydraulic tool to swage the pipe into the pre-machined grooves of the Quickflange™ connector, forming a permanent connection. The connectors were then successfully pressure tested to confirm the integrity of the installation.
Results
- Quickflange™ successfully used to deliver permanent, weldless flange-to-pipe connections for the new tank tie-in
- Tie-in completed 12 hours ahead of schedule
- Fast, cost-effective installation despite confined space constraints
